A board-certified psychiatrist is available to conduct Tele visits with eligible NIU students needing psychiatric treatment. TelePsychiatry is the practice of providing psychiatric care remotely through live and interactive video conferencing. We use a secure, HIPAA compliant platform to ensure patient confidentiality.
TelePsychiatry offers NIU students access to a board certified psychiatrist without having to leave the campus. Initial appointments are 1 hour in length and follow up appointments are 30 minutes. The visit will occur in the office, similar to other student health appointment; the only difference is the clinician will appear on a screen. The physician visits with the patient via their personal smart phone, conducts a thorough assessment, and together with the patient determines the best course of treatment.
Students can be seen at the Student Health Center for management of mental health conditions requiring behavioral and medication management. Services include:

- Evaluation of mental health concerns, mood disorders treatment (depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), disordered eating, obsessive compulsive disorder treatment, ADHD treatment (after review of past records)

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A PSYCHIATRIST AND A PSYCHOLOGIST?
A psychiatrist is a medical doctor (completed medical school and residency) with special training in psychiatry. A psychiatrist typically diagnoses mental health disorders and can prescribe medications.
A psychologist usually has an advanced degree, most commonly in clinical psychology, and often has extensive training in research or clinical practice. Psychologists treat mental disorders with psychotherapy (talk therapy) and some specialize in psychological testing and evaluation.
"Therapist" is a broader term used for those who are trained and licensed in a variety of fields to help people. Therapists can be:
